Heart of a Shepherd: Honoring Brother Douglas Allen “Doug” Pratt, Sr

To the Family of Brother Douglas Allen “Doug” Pratt, Sr.,

On behalf of myself and the entire Peytonsville Church of Christ family, we extend our deepest love and heartfelt sympathy to you.

Brother Douglas leaves behind a legacy that is inseparable from our church family. For over fifty years he faithfully served as an elder at Peytonsville. That kind of longevity in spiritual leadership is rare — and it reflects a life anchored in conviction, humility, and devotion.

Doug was baptized here. He worshiped here his entire life. He shepherded this flock for more than half a century. Generations have grown up under his watchful care.

Scripture says, “He tends His flock like a shepherd… He gently leads those that have young.” That gentle strength defined Doug. He was a kind and gracious man — steady in leadership, calm in counsel, gracious in correction. He never rushed to judgment. He moved toward people in love.

Jesus said, “I know My sheep.” Doug knew his sheep. He knew the families, the struggles, the joys, and the needs of this church. He strengthened the weak. He protected unity. He believed deeply that there is no work like God’s work and no people like God’s people — and he poured his life into both.

Personally, Doug loved and supported my family from the time my daughters were young. He stood present at Claire and Carlie’s baptisms, rejoicing in those special moments. He was more than an elder to us. He was a mentor, a friend, and a spiritual brother and grandfather.

Beyond the church walls, Doug was a faithful steward of his community. A graduate of Bethesda High School, he farmed and worked as a realtor his entire life. He loved gardening and the fruit of patient labor. That farmer’s heart carried into his shepherding — sowing faithfully, trusting God to bring the increase.

But above all, his family was his joy.

For 67 ½ years he loved his wife, Hazeline Rader Pratt — faithful to one woman, one church, one Lord. He cherished his sons, Douglas Allen Jr. (Sue) and Alvin Eugene (Sheila), and delighted in his grandchildren — Chris (Angie), Jennifer (Jake), Peyton (Danielle), Preston (Shelby), and Lacey (Hunter) — along with twelve great-grandchildren. His time at ballgames and family activities was his true joy.

One thing Doug often voiced to me personally was his desire to see the work at Peytonsville grow and continue long after his passing. He cared deeply about the future of this church. He wanted to see young families come. He wanted to see souls saved. He wanted to see the gospel preached boldly and faithfully in this community for generations to come.

That desire will not be forgotten.

In fact, as we gather for our upcoming Friends & Family Day on Sunday, March 22, we believe it will be a fitting opportunity to honor and remember Brother Doug. It is exactly the kind of day he longed to see — a day when doors are opened wide, families are invited, and the work continues forward. We invite all who knew and loved him to join us as we celebrate the faith that shaped his life and carry forward the mission he cherished.

The Psalmist wrote, “The Lord is my shepherd.” Doug lived under the care of that Good Shepherd. For decades he fulfilled the call to “shepherd the flock of God… willingly.” He did not serve for recognition. He served because he loved Christ and loved His people.

When David reflected on the loss of Saul and Jonathan, he cried, “How the mighty have fallen… swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.” Those words echo in our hearts today. Doug’s strength was not loud — it was steady, enduring, lion-hearted in faithfulness.

Though we grieve deeply, we do not grieve without hope. The Chief Shepherd has gathered home one of His own faithful shepherds. Brother Doug has finished his race. He has kept the faith. He has received his eternal reward.

To Hazeline, to his sons and their families, to every grandchild and great-grandchild — thank you for sharing him with us. His legacy lives on not only in your family but in this church family as well.

From all of us at the Peytonsville Church of Christ:

Thank you, Brother Doug, for your faithfulness.

Thank you for your kindness.

Thank you for your shepherd’s heart.

We loved him dearly.

We will miss him greatly.

And by God’s grace, we will carry the work forward — just as he hoped.

To the Work! Until We Meet Again,

Scott Bond, Peytonsville Church of Christ
